What fees does TikTok Shop actually charge sellers?

Last updated: July 2026 · 9 min read

Quick answer: TikTok Shop's US referral fee is commonly reported at 6% of order value for most categories, plus around 2% payment processing and a small per-order transaction fee. Those are the platform's charges. Once creator commission, samples, ad spend and returns are added, total channel cost lands nearer 30% of the selling price.

What does TikTok itself charge?

Three platform charges apply to a standard US order, and they are the easy part to model.

ChargeCommonly reported rate
Referral fee6% of order value for most categories (jewellery reported lower at 5%)
Payment processing~2%
Per-order transaction fee~$0.30

A 2026 fee breakdown sets out the current structure, and TikTok's own Finances FAQ is the authority. Rates change, so confirm at the point you model rather than relying on any summary.

Note also that opting into some promotional programmes carries an additional percentage, and that returns are not fully refunded on the fee side — a portion of the referral fee is typically retained as an administration charge.

Why is the headline 6% misleading?

Because it is a small share of what the channel actually costs. Sellers who model 6% and price accordingly discover the gap after volume arrives, which is the worst time to discover it.

The full stack on an affiliate-driven order looks more like this:

  • Platform charges — referral fee, processing, transaction fee.
  • Creator commission — typically the largest single line, commonly 10–20% depending on category.
  • Sample cost — units, packing and postage sent to creators, most of whom will never post. This is a real channel cost, not a marketing extra.
  • Ad spend, once you are scaling proven creative.
  • Fulfilment — pick, pack and postage, or FBT fees.
  • Returns — the refunded order plus the fee administration charge, and in apparel this is not a rounding error.

Published analysis puts the combined platform-plus-channel take near 30% of selling price on a typical US order. That is the number to price against.

How do fees differ from affiliate commission?

Sellers conflate these constantly, and they behave differently.

Fees are fixed and non-negotiable — TikTok sets them, they apply to every order, and no agency or volume tier changes them.

Commission is a decision you make. It applies only to affiliate-driven sales, you set the rate, and it is the main lever you have over channel economics. We cover how to set it from landed margin here.

The practical consequence: if the arithmetic does not work, the fees are not what you change. Your price, your product cost or your commission rate are.

How should you model a product before listing it?

  1. Selling price minus cost of goods, inbound freight and duties.
  2. Minus platform charges — roughly 8% plus the per-order fee, as a working figure.
  3. Minus fulfilment, including your realistic return rate for the category.
  4. Minus creator commission at a rate that will actually clear your category.
  5. Minus sample cost amortised across expected orders — genuinely include this.
  6. What remains funds ad spend and profit. If nothing remains, the product is not ready for this channel.

Run this per SKU rather than across the catalogue. A blended average hides the products that lose money on every order.

When do you actually get the money?

Later than most new sellers plan for, which is a cash-flow issue rather than a fee issue. Settlement runs on a delay from delivery, and newly onboarded shops sit on a longer introductory period before moving to standard terms. TikTok's settlement and reserve policy sets out the current structure.

Frequently asked questions

Commonly reported at 6% of order value for most US categories, with some categories differing. It is charged per order and is not negotiable.

No fixed monthly platform fee applies to standard US sellers. Costs are per-order, which makes the channel cheap to open and expensive to scale badly.

Largely, but not entirely — a portion of the referral fee is typically retained as a refund administration charge. In high-return categories this compounds and belongs in your model.

On the headline referral fee, generally yes. On total channel cost once creator commission, samples and ad spend are included, the two land in broadly similar territory.
